Diabetes and Nutrition

Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body converts food into energy. Your body converts most of the food you eat into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your bloodstream. An increase in blood sugar triggers the release of insulin by the pancreas. In your body, insulin acts as a key to let blood sugar enter your cells for use as energy. Nutrition is a critical part of health and development.

With diabetes, your body does not produce enough insulin or does not use as it should. If there is not enough insulin or when cells do not respond to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. Eventually, this can lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

For all those who are suffering from diabetes, it is always a big task to keep a check on the blood sugar levels and control the urge of having sugar and sweets. Although diabetes cannot be cured yet, losing weight, eating healthy food, and exercising can help. However, managing blood sugar levels becomes easier when you are taking the right diabetic supplements every day.

The three main types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant).

Type 1 Diabetes

Diabetes type 1 is thought to be the result of an autoimmune reaction (the body attacks itself by mistake). As a result of this reaction, your body cannot produce insulin. There are approximately 5-10% of diabetics people who have type 1.

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes usually appear quickly. Usually, it is diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults. Diabetes type 1 requires daily insulin injections to survive. There is currently no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body does not use insulin properly and cannot keep blood sugar levels normal. Type 2 diabetes affects 90-95% of all diabetes patients. It develops over many years and is most commonly diagnosed in adults (but is increasingly diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults). You may not notice any symptoms, so it’s important to get your blood sugar tested if you’re at risk.

A healthy lifestyle can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, which includes:

  • Losing weight
  • Eating healthy food
  • Being active

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes develops in pregnant women who have never had diabetes. Your baby may be at higher risk of health problems if you have gestational diabetes. After your baby is born, gestational diabetes usually goes away. However, it increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.  Your baby is more likely to have obesity as a child or teen and develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

Prediabetes

More than one in three adults have prediabetes. Eight out of ten don’t know they have it. Blood sugar levels are higher than normal in people with prediabetes, but not high enough to diagnose type 2 diabetes. A person with prediabetes is more likely to get type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
